...Winter Weather Awareness Week Begins Today
...
October 29 to November 4 is Winter Weather Awareness Week in New York and New England.
Winter in our area can bring some of nature’s most severe conditions. The December 2008 ice storm, the October snowstorm of 2011 and the blizzard of March 2017 are recent examples of the crippling effects of winter weather.
The National Weather Service urges everyone to be prepared for the upcoming winter season. Each day this week we will explore actions you can take to reduce the impact of winter weather.
Monday we will feature a review of winter weather preparedness activities designed to mitigate adverse impacts on your safety and health.
Tuesday we will review the meteorology of winter weather with an emphasis on heavy snowfall, lake effect snow, nor'easters, and blizzards.
Wednesday we will continue our study of winter meteorology as we look at ice storms.
Thursday we turn our attention to winter flooding with a focus on ice jams.
Friday we investigate the criteria for the issuance of winter weather watches, warnings, and advisories and what actions you should take when a watch, warning or advisory is issued.
Finally on Saturday, we review Winter Weather Awareness Week with an emphasis on preparedness.
Taking steps now to prepare for winter weather will allow you to keep safe this winter and enjoy the season.
When you need timely weather information ,you can get it on NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards. Weather radios are
inexpensive and alert you when severe winter weather is forecast . We are broadcasting twenty four hours a day from stations in New York and western New England.
